Question I have dual citizenship, being born in the US of Canadian parents. I lived in Canada until I remarried an American. He adopted my daughter when she was 10. She now has 2 sons and was wondering if they would have dual citizenship since she is Canadian born. The father is American. And would she have to file any papers to ensure this? Thank you!
Answer I'm not a citizenship expert and your particular case sounds complicated (adoptions and remarrage) so I am very hesitant to say anything. I will venture a "guess" and please understand that it is only a guess. If your daughter was adopted in the US and if her children were born in the United States and if their births were NOT registered with the embassy in Washington or with Citizenship and Immigration in Ottawa, then I don't think they have any claims on Canadian citizenship. I would strongly suggest that you visit the nearest Canadian consulite or check government of Canada website and look under Citizenship and Immigration. The URL for the government site is www.canada.gc.ca
