Question QUESTION: My father is a Canadian citizen and as a family we lived on PEI for a few years at which point I believe I was a CA citizen as I have a copy of my canadian healthcard. I was wondering if I still have, or ever did, Dual Canadian citizenship. What do I do to find out/reclaim citizenship with CA?
Currently I live in the States and would like to immigrate but, would like to retain dual citizenship. Any suggestions? Thanks
ANSWER: Having a health card does not certify citizenship. If you were born in Canada, then the chances are very strong that you have the right to Canadian citizenship. If not, I am sending you the URL for three Government of Canada publications concerning dual citizenship. Also you need to aware of the fact that I have no idea what rules concerning dual citizenship apply from the American government side. It is my understanding that they are much "tougher" than Canadian rules.
QUESTION: So, if my father is a born CA citizen do I have dual citizenship? How do I find out? Is there a consular info # I can call? I was born in the states, lived in CA for 2.5 yrs, my father was born CA, and my mother born in the States Where do I stand? Who do I contact to find out? Thanks so much.
Answer Sine I don't know where you are located, I can't tell you where the nearest consulate is. Did you read the three documents I gave you the URLs for? You could also contact the Canadian embassy in Washington,DC and ask to speak to to a Citizenship and Immigration official. I'm not an immigration lawyer so I can not (I shouldn't speak for the government of Canada) provide specific information that would apply in your particular case.
