Question I live in Ottawa and have recently received a violation notice from the city asking us to show that our car is roadworthy or have it removed from our property. This is an older model car which we are wanting to fix up. It is sitting beside and at the end of our long driveway near the house and definitely not on any city easement near the road.
This notice of violation is a concern for another reason as well as we sometimes take our second car off the road when we can't immediately afford a major repair. We just leave the thing sitting in our driveway and don't renew the plates but keep fire and theft insurance on the thing. Could we run into the same problem if it happens again that we need to park our second car for awhile? It seems a tad harsh to insist someone fix the car immediately or get rid of it if the only real crime is that you don't have the money for repairs at the moment.
There are others in our community who have cars in their driveways, clearly not roadworthy as they are up on blocks with parts such as hoods and doors removed. There are others who have seasonal cars and just leave them in their driveways under a car cover. Our car just looks like we parked it.
I don't have any other place to keep this car for now so I'm wondering what I can do. Can the problem be solved simply by putting a car cover over the thing or should I put a fence around it so no one can be offended by the sight of it? What if I put a "No Trespassing" sign up as well? Can a municipal worker come onto my property to see what is behind the fence or under a car cover?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Answer I suspect that there is a bylaw that allows the city to check if a vehicle is roadworthy and I would think that this came about from a complaint.
These types of Laws are to prevent residential areas from becoming Wrecking yards.
You should contact by law enforcement in your community to get clarification.
What in my answer did you fail to grasp.
It is clear from the information you provided that someone in your community complained to the city about the vehicle.
As to the solution I suggest you contact the City to see what the compaint is and how they would like you to correct the problem.
