You earned the ticket.

U-turns are NOT allowed:

- On a roadway BETWEEN intersections.

- Where a sign prohibits u-turns

- At an intersection controlled by traffic lights

- At an alley intersection.

I work for State Farm Insurance in Edmonton, AB.  Regarding demerit points or convictions affecting your premiums, at State Farm we only account for convictions. Demerits mean nothing to us.   We simply add up the number of convictions on your abstract to determine your rates.

Minor traffic violations (speeding, stop signs, U-turns) stay on your record for 3 years. Major violations, 5 years.

I was ticketed for a U Turn in Calgary (under the Alberta Traffic Law as well). And I pointed out to the officer that there was no 'no-u-turn' sign and he still ticketed me anyway. So I did some research on this subject.

It turns out that U-Turns are illegal AT and BETWEEN intersections in a urban area. This means that if one end of the block is a traffic light, and the other end is also a traffic light, then U Turns are illegal. After reading the traffic act, I don't bother doing U Turns any more because it basically says that they're illegal in all circumstances.

Here is section 30 in the Alberta Highway Traffic Act on U-turn  restrictions:

Restrictions on making U-turn

30   A person driving a vehicle shall not, at the following locations,

turn the vehicle so as to travel in the opposite direction:

(a) in the case of an urban area,

(i) on a roadway between intersections,

(ii) at an alley intersection, or

(iii) at an intersection where one or more of the highways

is an access to a public or private facility to which

the public normally has access;

(b) in the case of an urban area or a non-urban area,

(i) at a place where a sign prohibits making a U-turn, or

(ii) at an intersection controlled by a traffic control

signal unless specifically permitted by a traffic

control device.
