Question I have some concerns about the practices of my employer. I am a general manager at a restauant in Alberta. Recently, my employer has installed "security cameras" throughout the workplace. Not one of these cameras are actually used to record the entering or exiting of customers and/or possible robbers. All of these cameras are directly situated over the actual work areas. To me, these are not "security cameras", these are worker "spying" cameras. In Ontario, I am aware of laws against this, and was wondering if, in fact, this was illegal in Alberta also. Can it really be that Albertas workers right can be infringed upon to this degree? Is this really for our security, or can this just be another possible way to repremand an employee? Please help me out with some info on this subject.
Answer It is not illegal to have cameras in the workplace except in change rooms and washrooms.
Today more and more companies are using cameras to monitor their staff.
