Subject: Central Requirements for Democracy

Question
Hi,

I received a very broad and general essay question from my political science professor. He has asked us to define the central requirements for a country to be democratic, and whether we believe Canada fully meets these requirements.

He also told us to refer to a previous lecture  where he focused primarily on elitism and 'the iron law of oligarchy'.

I am having a difficult time forming a stable thesis for this essay, particularly one that I can write 8-10 pages trying to support. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
I rather suspect that this is far too late to be of any help, so I do apologize for taking so long to reply to you.

My suggestion would be to start by outlining the requirements for democracy. Next, try outlining the tenets of both elitism and the aforementioned "iron law of oligarchy." Take each of those elements and apply them to the Canadian system. Based on that analysis, is Canada democratic?

I hope that this helps.

I would be pleased to read a draft to help you out.

Adam
