Question The above two stocks were listed on a brokerage statement from 9/73 of my father's. Is there any value in them? Ashland Oil was orig.Canadian Gridoil. I do know it was taken over , but by whom? Thank you .
Answer Sheila, there are several issues in play here. The first is that you suggest that you only have a brokerage statement and not certificates. A brokerage statement is not proof of ownership, especially one that is 35 years old. Lots could have happened to those shares. For instance, take the Ashland Oil. Ashland was taken over by Kaiser Resources, but I believe the acquisition was for cash. In that case, your father would have likely received a check 30 years ago. Or, if the buyout was for stock, he could have sold it long ago.
The Dominion Jubilee seems to have disappeared about 30 years ago, and I have no idea what happened to it, unfortunately.
If you can find any certificates, you will have a place to start searching. Without any proof of current ownership, however, there is not much you can do unless you had a current transfer agent contact. Since the Transfer Agent maintains the ownership registry, they would know how many shares your father owned. If there were assets lost, you might want to check with each State or Province in which your father lived between 1973 and today and see if any assets, such as cash for a buyout or new shares, were turned over to the government for safekeeping on your father's behalf.
