I have found a stock certificate for United New Fortune Mines Limited dated Aug 15/67 as well as a certificate from Aberdeen Minerals Limited dated Mar 21/73 in my mother's files. Do you know if they are worth anything?

Unfortunately, from the information I have available, it appears the shares have no value. United New Fortune was dissolved in 1980, and it does appear there was any value for shareholders. Aberdeen was dissolved in 1987, and it does not appear there was any value for shareholders there, either.
