AnswerJohn, from the information I have available:
Fairfax changed names several times and had several reverse stock splits (a 1 for 3, then a 1 for 4, then another 1 for 3) and became Peak Gold, which merged into New Gold on the basis of 0.1 New Gold share plus 1 cent for every share of Peak. New Gold trades for about $8.50 per share currently.
Based on the reverses and the merger, your 1000 shares of Fairfax would be about 2 shares of New Gold. Not much, unfortunately. You need to contact the current transfer agent, Computershare (www.computershare.com) to confirm this information and see if you are a current shareholder of New Gold.
