Question
found an old stock from my deceased uncles papers, it is
AEC Alberta Energy Company Ltd.

dated 1996

is it worth anything ?

thanks , deb

Answer
Deborah, the worth of that certificate depends on if it is still valid and was not declared lost or otherwise reissued. Assuming that the certificate is valid, it likely does have value, or at least value exists somewhere.

Alberta Energy merged with PanCanadian to become Encana on the basis of 1.472 Encana shares for each share of Alberta Energy. Encana has recently split into 2 companies - Cenovus, which trades for about $26 a share, and Encana, which trades for about $28 a share.

You need to contact the current transfer agent, CIBC Mellon (www.cibcmellon.com) to determine if the certificate is valid. If so, they can help you file the required paperwork to reorganize the certificate into the new shares which will be issued to your late uncle's legal heirs.
