Question
I am the owner of a certificate for 7 shares of American Stores Company stock dated 1987, issued to me when I was an employee. American Stores no longer exists, having been acquired by Albertson's in 1999. Is this certificate worth anything?

Thanks.

Answer
Brent, I only have detailed information on Canadian companies. American Stores was a US company. But, this is pretty easy to track through the SEC filings (www.sec.gov). American Stores was acquired by Albertsons for 0.63 of an Albertsons share for each share of American Stores. Albertsons was acquired in 2006 for $20.35 in cash and a fixed exchange ratio of 0.182 shares of SUPERVALU for every share of Albertsons. You will need to contact Supervalu's current transfer agent to inquire about your old American Stores shares.
