Canadian Stocks/Goldcrest Mines Limited

I have a certificate for 500 shares at one dollar per share out of an issue of 3 million shares
from  Goldcrest Mines Limited of Toronto Ontario , Canada
transaction is dated June 23, 1945  in the name of someone who I do not know..
on the backside the certificate it seems to have been transferred to someone
and an old notation on the folder says transferred to my grandfather by default...
I don't quite understand all the stamps and signatures on the backside
Are these shares worth anything today.

Paul, from the information I have available, the Company has gone through numerous name changes, reverse splits, mergers, and acquisitions. It is now part of Penn West Petroleum, which trades for about $2.50 per share. Based on the capital changes, the original 500 shares might be a few Penn West, assuming the original shares were correctly transferred and noted with the transfer agent/registrar. I suggest you contact the current transfer agent ( and ask them to look into it for you.
