Question
I recently found a stock certificate that my husband had for 400 shares of Newport Petroleum.  The Transfer Agent shows to be First National Bank of Dallas.  Does this stock certificate have any value.  Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Peg, from the information I have available, Newport was acquired by Hunt Petroleum in 2000 for $5.50 per share cash. Your husband as the registered holder should have received a check for his shares at that time. If not, the cash would have been turned over to the government for safekeeping. You need to search the missing property offices of every state or province in which your husband lived from the time he acquired the shares until the buyout in 2000. You can search many of them online for free at www.missingmoney.com or www.naupa.org.
