Candle & Soap Making/Making Candles
Expert: Neecie - 2/16/2011
QuestionHi Nicky,
I have been making candles here in the United Kingdom of the UK for approximately 3 years and have been selling them to my friends and other people I don't know. Recently I expanded my business and am now selling novelty shaped candles to the European market and I have sold two candles in the shape of London Bridge to a couple of people in Qatar. I have recently appeared on Dragons Den, which is a show on TV, to gain an investment of 1.7 million pounds which was refused. Dragons Den has been on TV now for approximately 5 years and now boasts it 6th series which is a remarkable achievement that has been recognised by the Queen herself. After the first series viewing figures were counted in at approximately 3 billion viewers per show and the series went from strength to strength. Unfortunately after the first series several of the original dragons left the show and were replaced by new ones. It is important that you realise that the dragons are actually human entrepenaurs rather than mythical fire breathing creatures who live in caves.
My question is quite simple. Do you think that I can expand my candle making business in Europe and then into the USA. I understand from a mate of mine from the pub that the USA love candles and that given a choice would prefer lighting a candle rather than switching on a light?
Thanks Nicey for all your help.
Graeme
PS. Did you ever attend Harlow High School as my wife thinks she may have gone to school with you?
AnswerOne can certainly start a business by making candles for others to purchase. I've done it and so have so many others. The problem we all face is the market. When times are good, the business is good because people have extra money to spend. But when times are bad, sales can grind to halt. But to answer your questions specifically and please bear in mind that this is my person opinion, I do not think that candle light is preferred over a light bulb. Certainly in a public place such as a restaurant or pub. I did not graduate from Harlow High.
