Question
Hi, do you or would you recommend a bark control collor for dogs? My mom has two dogs and they bark an awful lot early in the morning and sometimes late at night and everyone we have talked to who have dogs have recommended a dog bark control collar.

Answer
Hi Andrea,
The first step I always recommend is to attempt to train the dog. (http://www.clickertraining.com/node/1125) Dogs bark, they simply aren't aware that it's annoying to humans, so we need to establish some communication that tells them what we prefer they do instead of continuing to bark.

If you are unsuccessful at training, then a bark collar may help.  However, please do not ever use the shock collar type.  It's inhumane, and causes many dogs to suffer anxiety and pain.  There is an alternative, a citronella spray collar, that has been shown to be more effective anyway.  It's sold under various trade names such as Gentle Spray, Aboistop, etc.  You can get them on eBay, Amazon, and many of the dog retailer sites, such as Dog.com, petexpertise.com (great site for positive training equipment) or SitStay.com.  Generally, the "sonic" bark collars are a dud - don't waste your money.  JMHO.
