Canine Behavior/my dog don't trust me

I had the pleasure of having a shepherd akita mix for his whole life of 17.5 years.  He will always want to run away.  He just wants that freedom to roam.  And he will come home.  Mine found out how to break out of every home during his 17 plus years.  But, he was also the most appropriately strong dog I have ever owned.  Naturally, will look after any and all people and dogs in his pack. Once, he protected me from two assailants and he always knew what was going on around us.  Great awareness.
