Canine Behavior/How to stop my min pin puppy from barking

Question
I have a 10 week old min pin pup. When my room mate and I are not home, we place the puppy in a room that we have set up for her, complete with toys, dog bed etc. The problem is that when we place her in her room she will bark and bark and bark. We do not spoil her by holding her and treating her like a baby, so I don't think her behavior is a result of that. How can we get her to not bark when we leave her.

Answer
She is quite young, and still has to get used to accepting the crate.  I suggest covering the crate with a blanket so it is dark.  If you are leaving you can put the radio or tv on.  Give her things to do in the crate like bones, stuffed kong, treat balls.

As she gets a bit older, you can teach a quiet command, this is done by first teaching speak command, then rewarding the dog when they stop barking while you say "quiet".  You can also correct her for nuisance barking, with a pinch to the scruff (like the mother dog does) and a "No", after that just the verbal "no" (or whatever word or noise you want to use) should stop her.  I hope that helps.

Jennifer of http://www.DynamicDogsChicago.com I can answer all questions on dog behavior, including common behavioral problems/issues and how to solve them. Many behaviors are natural and normal to dogs, but if it bothers the owner, it is an "issue". NO MATTER WHAT I TELL YOU OVER THE COMPUTER- your dog has to be evaluated in person and you need the help of a qualified dog trainer, especially for aggression issues. All dogs need a foundation of obedience, because you cannot properly correct behavior if a dog isn't trained. It is not very helpful for me to instruct you on a dog I have never seen in person, and an owners interpretation of the behavior isn't always correct, so try to just describe it, without adding in what YOU think it means.
