Question
i have a 7 year old yorky, she has been very good with going on potty on the training pads, recently she has been urinating on the pads but having bowel movement everywhere in the house even though i take her out she would not do it she would do it inside the house,i love her so much but i am at the end of my nerve, please help.

Answer
Dear Carol,
Thanks for writing. First get her checked out by your vet. Anytime there is a sudden change in house training habits, it's best to rule out medical conditions.

The next step is to review her diet and place her meals on a schedule.  Have you changed her food? Is she getting different treats? Feed her at regular times each day and take the bowl up - no snacking in between meals.

Have you scolded her for accidents? If so, that might explain whey she won't potty outside when you are near her. Scolding doesn't really teach dogs where to eliminate, but it does teach them to hide from us when they eliminate. Take her outside on a long line, that way she can eliminate when she is not right next to you.

Keep a log of feeding and elimination. Since her meals are on a schedule, her bowel movements should become regular. If you know she is "due" to have a bowel movement, don't let her out of your sight inside.

Good Luck and thanks for writing.
