Canine Behavior/frequent licking

Question
We have a 4.5 y.o. boxer/lab(we think)mix, adopted at 4 mo. from the pound. Very healthy, playful, leans to defiance (manageable) Early mornings and frequently during the day she licks her privates vigorously & whines. Ive inspected, cleansed, put antibiotic ointment on, when there is a rash but this continues. I think she's going to damage the tissue & then we'll have a huge problem. There are no cuts, scratches, rashes or irritations I can see at present, but the behaviour continues. Am I missing something?

Answer
If she is whining, she could have pain or intense itching.  She may have a urinary tract infection.  Take her to the vet and bring a urine sample with you.  Also, be very careful about using human medications on dogs!  Antibiotics should only be given when an infection is present, not just when you suspect one - that way there is less chance for bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic, and have it be ineffective when you really need it.  BTW, dogs are rarely "defiant".  More likely is that the dog is confused about what you expect.  Take her to a positive training class before you assume that she is pushy or doesn't want to please.  Or, try some of the lessons here: www.clickerlessons.com.
