Canine Behavior/Cookie Update

Question
Hello again Alan,

This is an email update and question follow-up re: Cookie's elimination issues during Cold/Wet/Rainy weather. After reading through your extensive email of suggestions, I went to work right away on eliminating the possibilities on what 'exactly' it was that was making my little Cookie so upset. It turns out that its all in the surrounding environment, such as if she gets spooked by a strange noise, or is easily distracted by birds in the trees and so on, then that's when her chance to eliminate has been spoiled. So, to eleviate the problem, she is crated ONLY ON THOSE EVENTS where she was 'spooked', and we try again until she eliminates. Since then, we have had very few accidents in the house. :-)  :-)

Okay, now for my question:

Since I adopted Cookie, my other Shih Tzu named Chicco (male, pure-bred, 6 years old/no health concerns) has been (I feel) experiencing symptoms of depression. This ONLY HAPPENS during play-time. The sinerio goes like this: Anytime that I want Chicco to play with me(such as fetch the toy or play fight) where he shows his teeth, Cookie attacks his viciously, as, she may feel that Chicco is hurting her new master, when indeed, he is not. So, ever since this has occurred, Chicco WILL NOT PLAY ANYMORE. I have tried to encourage play time between him and I, but he shakes and cries because it is very obvious he is threatened by Cookie. Cookie and Chicco however get along wonderfully during our walks, cuddle time and so on. It is only during play-time that Chicco feels threatened. So, how can I encourage Chicco to feel comfortable with the way we use to play PRIOR to receiving Cookie, and how can I get Cookie not to attack Chicco during play-time? Unusual set of circumstances, and I look forward in a reply from you shortly.

Warmest Regards,

Tina, Chicco & Cookie :-)

Answer
Hi Tina,
Thanks for the update. Break your goal into smaller goals. For instance:
1) get Chicco to play as before
2)Get Cookie to allow rough play without attacking

For now, don't let Cookie interrupt the play. Play with Chicco when Cookie is not nearby.

The environment is somewhat out-of-balance if Cookie takes it upon herself to "protect" you. I'm guessing there are other times when Cookie gets overly-excited and all of these represent the same problem.

Teaching Cookie to remain calm during rough play is beyond the scope of this board. There are books about the subject! Buy the book, Feeling Outnumbered- How to Manage and Enjoy a Multi-Dog Household by Patricia McConnell.

Follow Patricia's instructions and you will succeed. Thanks again for the update. That's a thoughtful act! Good luck!
