I have a puppy that is 7 weeks old now and he started humping my leg and when I fend him off he growles.  I called my vet who said he is trying to establish that he is the boss, he is trying to dominate me and that I should nip that behavior in the butt right away to let him know who the boss is.  She told me to yell out in the most masculine voice just once really loud and if he stops it then have him sit in front of you for a moment and stroke his head with your hand.  I tried it right away.  I yelled loudly when he started humping my leg and he ran off fast as lightning and then came back right away.  He sat in front of me and looked at me with a puzzled look but he had calmed down completely so I told him what a good boy he is and stroked his head.  Also the vet said that if he humps and growles to hold him and see if it calms him down.  If he tries nipping at you hold him away from your body until he calms down and then set him down and stroke his head to let him know that is the behavior you want.  It really worked for us!

I will answer all questions about canine behavior and training, training methods and equipment. Be ready to provide dog's name, age, sex, breed and how long you have owned the dog. In addition, it'd be great for me to know how long the problem has been occurring, what you have tried to solve the problem(s) and what were the results.

The more information you provide me - the better equipped I will be to offer sound, helpful advice! Thank you.
