Canine Behavior/optimum number of pet shelties

Question
My friend has six shelties. I think that that is too many dogs for optimum
happiness for a pet(s). Is there a recommended number of shelties per
household for maximum happiness?

Answer
Dear Walter,
Thanks for the interesting question. Just like children, dogs need a bit of individual attention with their owners. Although it seems like it may be very difficult to give each dog what they need, many families with several dogs are able to raise happy well-adjusted companions. I suppose it depends on the individual dogs, the household and how much time they have to devote to each animal.

I will step out on a limb here (smile) and say that the average dog owner with multiple dogs is not prepared to deal with behavior problems - simply because they have so many dogs.

That being said, I recommend that anyone with more than one dog get the book, Feeling Outnumbered? How to Manage and Enjoy Your Multi-Dog Household.

It can be done, but it can also be lots of work!

Sorry I couldn't give you a clear answer - it really depends on so many things it's tough to make a call. I visited and worked with people that shouldn't own one dog, so the number of dogs is not always the key factor to consider.

Happy Training!

I will answer all questions about canine behavior and training, training methods and equipment. Be ready to provide dog's name, age, sex, breed and how long you have owned the dog. In addition, it'd be great for me to know how long the problem has been occurring, what you have tried to solve the problem(s) and what were the results.

The more information you provide me - the better equipped I will be to offer sound, helpful advice! Thank you.
