Subject: Remote Key will not disengage alarm

Question
Today, I accidently fell into some water while my keys were in my pocket. The key and alarm remote is an all in one thing. It wasn't until a few hours later that while it was sitting on the table did it set the alarm on my 98 forerunner. Now it will not start b/c we cannot get the alarm to turn off. Is there a way that I can reset the alarm without having it towed to another town to a dealership and pay a million dollars. I'm not really interested in using the remote again anytime soon, I just want my truck to start so i can drive to work.

Answer
It's likely to be an after market system.

To try to disarm it,
look under the dash area for a button or,
a toggle switch. When you locate it, turn on the
ignition key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.=VALET/OVERIDE

This stops the alarm except for the keyless
entry if installed. Once in Valet mode,
it will allow the car to start and operate
like there was no alarm at all.

The next step is to totally dry out the
remote. Take out the battery and heat lamp it dry.
That should correct it from transmitting unit
you are ready. Repeat valet operation to go back
into user mode to be able to try again.

That should solve the troubles.
Let me know what you discover.
