Car Alarms/car wont start could it be my alarm

Question
I recently bought a 1993 Nissan pathfinder i had to have the exhaust manifold gasket worked on, while it was getting worked on the alarm started going off. I did not even know I had an alarm I don't have a remote for the alarm. Now once we connected the battery cable the alarm goes off. The car will not start now the only thing that happens is the alarm goes off. Could the problem be the alarm, should i buy one of those programmable remotes or will that even help me?
