About Justin Wheeler
Expertise
I can answer questions about the electronics and mathematics behind car stereos, provide information on locating wires, wire interference, gauges, etc. Since they're almost entirely subjective, asking questions about brand names may not result in the most useful answers.

Experience
I've been installing car stereos for friends and family (albeit not professionally) for 8 or 9 years. My knowledge lies mostly in the math and technical aspects: impedance, required gauges, fuse levels, frequency response, etc.

Car Stereos - installation question

Expert: Justin Wheeler - 11/4/2009

Question
I have a 08 GMC Canyon.  Getting ready to install sub and amp, would like to use factory head unit.  Can you tell me if my factory unit has rca and remote jack, if not what is the best way to install w/ out buying aftermarket unit.  Is there a better way to set up other than buying an adaptor for these, have always heard you loose sound potential using these adaptors.  Thanks for your help.  Zac

Answer
Hi Zac,

First off, to be honest, I don't know your deck as I haven't worked with any 08 Canyons.

That said, it's unlikely it has any sort of output that you could use for an amp.

You'll need either an aftermarket deck, or a high-level output converter.  While there might be some degradation in quality with a high-level converter, you're highly unlikely to notice it on a subwoofer since they only reproduce very low frequency sounds anyway.

Justin
