Car Stereos/BMW stereo

Question
Hi There,
I bought a 1995 BMW 740 IL and the stereo cuts off and on. Sometimes when you pull out the cassette deck and tap on it, it starts back up. But will at anytime go right back off. Some days it will play most of the time but on other days it will not come on at all. When it is playing I noticed as I slow down the stereo goes off but if I can get it back on it seems to stay on while driving. Haunted, huh? Lol. Any suggestions? Thanks...Terry

Answer
Hi Terry,

The most likely scenario here is simply loose wiring or a loose/cold solder joint inside the unit.

Remove the unit entirely, and thoroughly inspect the harness going into it for corrosion, breaks, tears, stretched wire, etc.

If that checks out, you might be best just to replace it.. with something that plays something newer than cassettes, preferably. ;)

Expertise

I can answer questions about the electronics and mathematics behind car stereos, provide information on locating wires, wire interference, gauges, etc. Since they're almost entirely subjective, asking questions about brand names may not result in the most useful answers.

Experience

I've been installing car stereos for friends and family (albeit not professionally) for 8 or 9 years. My knowledge lies mostly in the math and technical aspects: impedance, required gauges, fuse levels, frequency response, etc.
