Question
Hello Ms. Abboud:
I have taken and received good grades in college writing and editing courses. Recently I paid attention to the University Press and there is an unpaid internship in editing and production. I was wondering if this internship could lead to (or be suitable experience) for a position as an editor on some publication?
Do you know where I might research this further?

Thanks.

Answer
Congratulations on getting the internship! While there is no way to know if any internship will lead to a job offer, your internship will look great on your resume. You can increase your odds of getting a job offer—or an excellent recommendation or referral to another job—by doing the best job that you can. Be sure to show up on time, work hard, maintain a positive attitude, and make yourself as indispensable as you can.

While you are interning, try to make some contacts with the people who you meet on the job. When you have an opportunity, ask them if you can get their advice about finding an entry-level position.

I suggest that you consider joining a professional association in order to network in your intended career field. Most associations offer inexpensive student membership rates.  There are links to many organizations on this webpage:

Be sure to check out any organization thoroughly before joining. Check with your academic advisor or one of your instructors for more suggestions.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck!
