Question
Hi my name is michelle and i'm 15 yrs old i'm starting to think of what i want as a career my mom says "a career with not a lot of years in college and that it gives you a lot of money" The thing is that i'm trapped between two careers i want have them both but i can only pick one. I've thought about being a "pharmacist" or "marine animal trainer" I like pharmacy because you can get your degree in like 4 years and this job pays really good and that's the career my mom puts a thumbs up, but i really don't picture my self doing that for the rest of my life. On the other hand i really love dolphins i practically live in seaworld interacting with them and everything, also not a lot of years in college but i don't really know how much the trainers get payed, and my mom thinks that's the stupidest job ever, she says that there's no future in being a trainer. I have looked at other careers but nothing really interests me. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Michelle,

First of all, I suggest that you take some career assessments to make sure that you have identified a list of careers that would probably suit you based on your interests, skills, and values.  A good career counselor can administer these assessments and assist you with the interpretation.  It's a good idea to make sure that you have really done your research on careers before making a decision.

If after having done your research you find that the careers that interest you most do not pay enough to support you, then you should probably think about having a vocation and an avocation.  Your vocation is the job that pays the bills.  Your avocation is a passion that you pursue in your leisure time.

To find out how much animal trainers are paid, I suggest that you look at this link:  http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Animal_Trainer/Salary
