Question
Hello, I have worked for 33 years as an auto mechanic. Now 58 years old, I need a career change, but have no idea of what type job I could perform, and still earn a decent wage.I've been searching the internet without much luck. I did see an offer as a luggage handler at a better hotel. I could certainly do this typr work, and from what they said, you can make decent money in tips. One problem I face is my resume. Already, I have found that prospective employers see me as only valuable to someone looking for an auto mechanic. Any ideas? Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Kirby,

Thanks for writing.

One way to overcome this obstacle to to write a resume that focuses on your competencies, assets, and goals rather than just your job history.  This is sometimes called a "functional resume" or a "targeted resume".  You can see some examples of the various kinds by doing an online search.
