Question
im thinking of changing my major to photography from biology. if i were to do so i would want to open up my own business taking pictures at weddings, graduations, ect. but before i make my decision, i know i can go into several fields with biology under my belt but i would love to take pictures. my question is... would it be difficult to start my own photography business? Is it worth it to change? And should i change?

Answer
Hello Michael,

>>Would it be difficult to start my own photography business?
Starting any business is a challenge.  But you could certainly get started without spending a lot of money.  You could start small and build.  Learn as you go.

>>Is it worth it to change?
If you are passionate about photography, then it is worth investigating further.

>>And should i change?
This may not be an "either/or" scenario.  You may be able to test the waters of the photography business before changing your major.

I would suggest that you find several reputable photographers who have been in business for several years.  Ask them lots of questions about what the photography business is really like.  Ask them if you can go along with them on some shoots.  Offer to help them carry their gear or assist them with a few shoots for free.  Learn as much as you can about photography and the business of photography.  Interview them.

After this experience you may choose one of several options including one the following:
-Change your major to photography
-Major in biology and do photography as a side business or hobby
-Decide that neither biology nor photography is what ultimately want for your major

My point is to investigate it and research it to see if it is right for you.
