Career Planning/how do i begin my dream career?
Expert: Jodey Smith - 6/12/2009
QuestionI am a current college student considering a change of major. Previously I THOUGHT I wanted to work in health care (radiography) however I've slowly come to realize that I'd be happiest working on electrical equipment; specifically audio equipment. I am an active musician (hobbyist) and my only experiences working on electronics have been repairing and modifying my own equipment. I have no formal education in this field but I've done ok for being self taught. I am very "hands on" and know that I want to build/repair/maintain/test electronics and would LOVE if it could be audio equipment, however, I'm not sure what sort of job title this would fall under or what sort of college major I should choose to obtain this goal. I would love to hear any and all input. I guess I just don't know where to start.
AnswerHi Jon,
Thanks for writing.
It is great that you have found a career field that you enjoy and in which you have competence.
Don't worry about job title too much. But this would probably be classified as a technician position.
Formal education can be a good thing. But it is not necessary for every career. Some of the most successful people in business have no degree. And a large percentage of graduates work in a field outside their degree.
It sounds like your career interest doesn't necessarily require a traditional college degree. You might be better off at a Technical School. I know there are schools out there that teach this kind of stuff. There are also business owners who will train you if you work for them.
You just need to do some research to find a good reputable school or business that matches your interest. Then start talking to the people at the schools or businesses you find. Ask lots of questions.
You may even be able to do this on the side if you still want to pursue a traditional college degree too.
