Question Hi
My son graduated from high school last year and since then he has been working as a delivery driver.
He wanted to take a year off from education to think about what he wants to do.
He has decided he would like to go to trade school, however, he cant decide what trade.
Fortuneatly, the city where we live has a large vocational college with most of the major trades.
He never has any hobbies, isnt particularly interested in cars or fixing stuff.
Can you suggest a few trades that might interest him.
I have held a few jobs over the years and I told him what I didnt like-Hotel/restaurant-lots of night work,low wages.
-Outside construction i.e.carpentry-we live in a cold climate
-skilled trades like pipefitting where you have to move from job to job.
-trades like machinist where you are always in a smelly shop environment.
I know its a lot to ask for, but can you think of a few trades with a good work environment, are fairly interesting, and generally in demand?

Answer Have you considered taking the ASVAB test to determine a trade or vocation for your son? I know that this test is normally associated with military admissions, but it is great too in identifying aptitude in trades and vocations.
I would suggest he meet with an advisor at your local community college and sign up to take the ASVAB test. You and he will be pleasantly surprised by the results and career targets it will point out for you.
