Question
Hey Christine! I am so confused on what I should take in college! My main interest is fashion, marketing, coordinator. I love coordinatoring, I enjoy it so much. I just love to plan events for parties, birthdays, weddings! But yet I'm confused with what I should do. I want a career with good pay and interesting, fun work! I also love fashion merchandising. I want to be a fashion coordinator.. But I don't know where to start? What classes and etc. I want to do fashion shows, merchandise high end stores and plan everything. But I do not that to create fashion, do textiles.. I hate it! I looked at some courses but it all says you have to complete textiles which I hate... So I'm so confused ! Help please.

Answer
Hi Suzy,

It sounds like what you really love is coordinating things.  This is what I call a "transparent" interest/occupation in that you can lay it over whatever subject area fascinates you (e.g. fashion) but the subject area can also change over time as your interests change.

What you might want to look for are programs that are about fashion merchandising (so it's about the retail end of fashion and not the design/manufacturing end) or not even aim for something that's specifically about fashion in your education (e.g. marketing, events coordination, business administration) and then during summers and once you graduate, simply apply for jobs in the fashion sector.

If you take business admin or events management programs, they will allow you a broad range of options at the end.  You could work as a wedding coordinator, a general party planner, an event manager for a hotel, a fashion show coordinator, etc.  It will leave lots of doors open for your variety of interests and opportunities.  You might want to ask the program admissions people where their graduates go as well to get some hard data to back up your assumptions and ideas.

Good luck!

Christine
