Question
Hi, I have been working in the arts/creative line for 10 years. Been working
as a graphic artist, motion graphic designer, product photographer and
video editor. They are all entry level position and I haven't been able to
move up as my skills and knowledge are limited. I went on to study a
degree in advertising and graduate with a 2nd lower honors degree. I am
currently working in a printing company as a DTP/graphic designer for
2years now. My knowledge of printing is still in the infancy and my graphic
design skill is still not very outstanding. I am wondering if I should continue
do a career switch. Pls advice. Thank you.

Answer
Meiping,

Do you enjoy the work that you are doing?  If so, stay the course.  Your experience in the arts/creative industry will continue to grow.  Be willing to "step out of the box" and try new things either on the job or at home in your spare time so that you can enhance your skills and abilities.

If this is a possibility, identify someone within your organization who has the more intricate skills and ask to be mentored by him/her on the job OR if that is not possible, then outside the company.

First you've got to identify what you want in regards to skills and knowledge, find a person who is already where you want to be, and then learn EVERYTHING you can from them so that you can grow in your profession as well and not feel stale or stagnant.

I hope this helps!
