Question
I am in my second year of college. I am currently majoring in criminology. I am working towards a minor in psychology. I am interested in the counseling aspect of the psychology field. Initially I wasn't interested in psychology so that is why I chose to major in criminology. But I was more interested in working with victims of crime. After I graduate I was looking in getting my masters in counseling. Am I wasting my time majoring in criminology or could this be useful?

Answer
Hi Katelyn,

It sounds like majoring in criminology might be beneficial.  But here is what I suggest before you make your decision...

Find people that are currently doing what you hope to do in the future.  You said you are interested in Counseling.  You also said you are interested in working with victims of crime.  Find reputable people & organizations that are already doing these things.  Call them up.  Email them.  Visit them.  Ask them questions.  Ask if you can interview them.  Ask if you can shadow someone for a day or a week or a month.  Ask if you can do volunteer work with them.  Ask. Ask. Ask.

This should give you some good wisdom as you make your decisions.
