Question
QUESTION: Hello, I am moving to NYC in a few months (as soon as I receive my BA in Philosophy). I am moving to try and break into the acting industry. It has been a dream of mine forever but I've waited to truly pursue it until I received my degree. I won every role I have auditioned for (4 theatre roles and in an independant film[all leads} in Milwaukee, WI)I am not sure what to do when I arrive in NYC. Do I need an agent, where should I apply for one? I am about to get some headshots taken by a photographer friend. Any direction and advice would be wonderful!

ANSWER: Bianca,

Thanks for writing. Since you've been away from acting for a while, you need to get into some acting classes. Casting Directors like to see actors studying, especially with acting teachers they like and respect. When you get to NYC, purchase a subscription to BACKSTAGE magazine which you'll receive every other week. In it you will fijnd auditions, acting classes, photographers, etc. It's a good resource. Get into some acting classes, get some good headshots taken, begin auditioning for as much as you, network with as many people in the business as you can, and send your resume and headshot to as many agents as possible (especially if you're cast in something) and let them know you are seeking representation. Then ask them for a general interview. Call them 1 week after you've mailed them your stuff. Be nice to the assistants - they're the gate-keepers. If you piss them off, you'll never get in to see the agent.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Phil

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your advice! What would be some good schools or acting teachers where I could take up classes? Also, do you have any advice on what would be some good agencies or where could I find a list of them? Thanks!!

Bianca

Answer
Bianca,

I'm afraid I cannot help you there. I haven't worked in NYC in a number of years so I am unfamiliar with what's good and bad when it comes to acting teachers there. One I do know is good is called the HB Studios in the West Village. As far as talent agencies, your best bet is to purchase a copy of The Hollywood Representation Directory and see which agencies have offices in NYC.

Good luck!

Phil
