Question
Hi I'm a current TV broadcasting/Production student. I'm about to graduate in May and looking to start my first official internship sometime within this last semester. I've Directed, worked cameras, written, drawn a few storyboards, and edited video for class projects. I've also written a full screenplay, CO-written a second, and starting on two more solo scripts. I've also written a few concept TV scripts for ideas of mine. To add I do have some art skills as far as drawing, and I am trying to teach myself how to use Photoshop as an added skill. With all that said I have three major questions for you. I love TV, but I want to hopefully one day soon work with the film industry. Is it difficult for newcomers in this field to crossover into the film realm, especially if you don't live LA (closest big city is Atlanta)? And also what's the best way as far as trying to work your way up the ladder in the TV or film business cause I don't wanna work cameras forever (would rather be in a more creative setting, writing, acting, producing, etc.) As far as my last question is concerned, I Remember a while back when Bravo (TV network) was running ads for some kind of group which was focused on getting more minorities behind the cameras (working sets, cameras, etc.). You wouldn't happen to know the name of the website or group would you? I checked the Bravo website but couldn't find anything about it. Thanks for your time.

Answer
John,

Thanks for writing. Let me see if I can answer your questions.

1) It is not difficult to crossover, especially in smaller markets like Atalnta.

2) The key to moving up is getting on the right ladder to begin with. If you want to be a director, don't go to work as a camera operator. If you want to direct or produce, go to work in development for a production company.

3) I'm sorry, but I'm unfamiliar with the BRAVO show you speak of. You might try calling BRAVO since the info doesn't seem to be on their website.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Phil
