Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Acting to come out of shell

Question
Hi Kenneth, I know nothing about acting or drama coaches, but I am thinking of the possibility of using the services of such a coach to help me deal with my social anxiety. For example, my problems approaching people, having an assertive voice, relaxing and keeping a good posture etc.

Also, I have a particular problem with being able to smile when I am nervous. How do actors deal with this issue? Are there any secret methods that you know of?

I am 30 years old so I imagine it is late to actually join an acting class with a group. It would be extremely difficult for me as I am so self conscious. Although the whole idea seems out there, I think it could be a helpful thing. I would apprciate your advice.

Best regards

Mike

Answer
Hey Mike.  I can empathize with you as I have had those same problems throughout my life and it hindered my career as an actor because of it. There are several acting studios which offer private instruction as well as begining acting group classes which also may help you.  Actor and politicians have learned to concentrate on smiling and keeping their cool under pressure. I do not know the secredt of having such poise as demondstrated by Sarah Palin, for example. Contact an acting studio in your area and ask about private instruction to build confidence.  Another way to do this is to join Toastmasters, a group that teaches poise in public speaking situations, that poise can then be transfered to all situations. Best wishes, Doc
