Question
I was wondering what tense you would write a cover letter in for a 7yr. old. Let's say her name is Emma, do I say "My name is Emma", or do I say My daughters name is Emma? And at the end is it Sincerely my name, or her name?

Answer
You can do it either way, but I recommend because of her age that in this case the cover letter be written from the parent introducing her child to (an agent/agency.)

I think it is appropriate for someone a bit older - perhaps a teenager to write their own cover letters, as at times it can end up sounding a bit too "cute" for younger talent to write a cover letter in their own words.

Particularly at that age, the parent is just as much a part of their child's career, as the child is themselves.  The parent needs to be involved as they sign contracts and legal paperwork, drive the young talent to auditions and jobs, as well as help them prepare marketing materials, if necessary, such as headshots, demo tapes, photos, et al.

While some agencies are quite open to creative cover letters, I personally feel that it is best to start out with the most professional inquiry possible.  Although Emma is seven, she is looking to work in a business where she is at first (and fundamentally) represented by her parent(s).

You can then sign the cover letter as Sincerely, or Best Regards, Your Name on behalf of Emma.  Presumably if they call to have an interview with Emma, they would be phoning your number, and you would need to be available to attend the interview with her.  So it's fine for you to write the letter on behalf of Emma, and is something that is done in that way quite often.

Good luck to you both,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
