Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/I really want to be an actress.

Question
Hi, my name is Alexandra. I've wanted to be an actress for as long as I can remember. But I don't know where to start. I was attending an acting school by the name of John Robert Powers, but I stopped going because it was either a scam, or it wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. Nevertheless, I have little, but some experience, and I also believe that I have a natural talent for acting, and I would be willing to perform it for any agent. I'm very out going and I don't get nervous or embarrassed too easily. I'm in 9th grade and I live in Simi Valley, which isn't too far from L.A. My lifelong dream is to be on Disney Channel. I've tried searching the Internet, but I'm afraid of getting jipped again. Also, my chances of ever getting on Disney channel through Internet are probably 0. So I was wondering if you had any recommendations on how to get an agent? I understand you say I need to invite them to see me perform my talent, but how would I get in touch with one? Please answer if possible! Thank you very much, and God bless.

Answer
Alexandra,

Thanks for writing. You're correct, an agent needs to see your work in order to know if he can market you. The best resource guide for talent agencies and agents is a book called The Hollywood Representation Directory. You can find it online at www.hcdonline.com. It lists the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the big AND small talent agencies in the Los Angeles area. I'd start there.

Since you're in Simi Valley, you have access to purchasing a copy of Backstage West, the bi-weekly industry trade paper for actors. Pick up a copy, look for the listings of acting teachers, go and visit a few, and enroll in some acting classes in Los Angeles. Most acting classes will present a showcase of the students at the end of the semester for invited agents, casting directors, etc. It's a great way to be seen by people in the industry. And who knows, maybe someone will see your work, like it, and offer to represent you!

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Phil
