Question
I am 13 and i have wanted to become a model for ages. but i don't know how, i live with my aunty and uncle, and i don't know how to tell them i would like to become a model? i think they want more for me. how do i tell them? and what happens if they say no?

Answer
Hi there,

I understand how you feel as I felt the same at your age. It was the era of the supermodel after all and I really wanted to be up there on the catwalk with them and in all the glossy ads.

13 is very young to model as the industry is harsh and you face an ego bashing with 99.5% rejection on a daily basis. There are also people who will try to take advantage of you due to your age. Ask yourself why you really want to be a model- it's not easy or glamourous in reality.

I'm glad that you want to tell your aunty and uncle as they know you well and only want the best for you. It is their guidance you must listen to. If they say no, then ask them about their concerns. DO NOT GO AHEAD ANYWAY!!! I started modelling locally when I was 16 and then moved to London (UK)when I was 18. It is important to get your education as you'll need that to fall back on. At 18 I was mentally ready to survive in the industry.

If your aunt and uncle agree to you modelling, then please ensure they are with you every step of the way to protect you. Find a list of reputable agencies and send a head shot and full length. It doesn't have to be professional as they will see if you fit with their look from a normal shot. Never pay to join or to do a model course- this is to rip you off. Any good agency will sort out test shoots for you and make money from clients, not from ripping off you.

Hope this helps and I wish you all the best.

Experience

I am currently a model and have 13 years experience in both editorial and commercial modelling. During this time I worked for catalogues, TV commercials, advertising, advertorials, catwalk, editorial, front covers and showroom. I have also diversified into other areas of fashion as a stylist and fashion journalist. This has given me a greater depth of understanding into what clients are looking for at a casting.
