Question
I am a retired dancer/choreographer in NYC who cannot seem to let theater alone.  My choreography (modern dance) was very theatrical and I have been thinking of trying to move back into the theater world (I have a BA in acting) as a director.  I do not want to be an independent artist again, I would prefer to be part of an organization.  Of course I cannot just walk in and get offered a directing position - and I am no longer in that 20s phase where being an intern works out so well.  I do have many technical theater skills, but was never a professional in that capacity, so being hired as a techie just to get my foot in the door may not work out so well.  The plus and minus of NYC is that it is a hub, so no one casually does anything here - everything is full throttle with stars in the eyes.  But I just want to get back in the pool, see what the water feels like and start building some pathways.  Where do you suggest I start?

Answer
Hi Noel,  Well, if you do not belong to the director's union, you are going to have to find a non union position. With your resume, there ought to be a number of theatre organizations that would consider hiring you. There are tons of community theatres in greater NYC and I would apply to them first. Also do a web search of youth theatre organizations that you could apply to, and so on. Best wishes, Doc
