Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Should I look into modeling?

Question
I'm 18 and a senior in high school right now. I'm asian too! I am 5'5" and 138 lbs. I have a very good body compared to most people I see in magazines (sears, jc penny etc..). My looks are decent to good. I have some mild acne that I am working on clearing up.

How might one go into the modeling industry? Am I qualified for it? do I have to be a 5'9" guy to do modeling? How much do models get paid (and how are they paid?) How attractive do you have to be? Is modeling a "fun" job?

Answer
You're too short for fashion modeling, but could look into commercial print modeling.  There are quite a few books written about the various types of modeling (available in your local library, bookstore or online).
I suggest looking for a licensed/legitimate modeling/talent agency in your area that has a commercial print modeling division.  Your agent is the one who finds modeling job opportunities for you, and they take a percentage (usually 10-20%) off of the money you earn through them.
Commercial print agents do not have standard criteria like fashion agencies do for height, age and size - although individual agencies may set their own criteria (such as representing only children, only adults, or a minimum height).  Many commercial print agencies have websites or information in modeling agency directories that will tell new faces what they are looking for.
As far as being qualified, you do need to be photogenic.  I have known gorgeous people who you can't get a good photo from, and people who look plain in person, and completely different (the camera "loves" them) in photos.  No experience or training is required or necessary to become a model, and being attractive in the traditional sense is not important - although it is helpful to have good teeth and skin.
The pay for each job varies widely from $75-$100 to thousands with fashion models earning the most with contracts that can go into seven digits.  Unlike fashion modeling, commercial print models usually work in their local area - and pay varies with larger markets (like NYC) often paying more than smaller market locations (like Atlanta).  Your agent gets paid by the client, and then they pay you minus their commission.
As to whether modeling is fun depends on the individual preferences of the model.  It's a heady rush for some, while others may find it boring.  Some enjoy the attention and all eyes being on them, while others may feel self-conscious.  I know for myself personally, I would do both modeling and acting whether I was being paid or not - and I can't think of something else I would prefer more as a profession.
Good luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
