Question
Whats the difference between commercial, print and fashion modelling? If possible could you tell me the height and size requirments of each?

Answer
Fashion modeling can be print or runway, with the clients usually being fashion or beauty products.  Fashion holds strict height, size and age requirements, although there is some variation between different fashion agencies, and different countries.

Generally, a fashion model should be a minimum height of 5'8-5'9 for women, 6'-6'2 for men.  Women usually start younger at age 16-18, and as a new face may be considered up until age 22 or so.  Men can be slightly older than that as a new face.  A woman should be able to wear a size 4-6, with measurements of around 34-24-34.  Men should be able to wear a size 40R or 40L.  Both men and women should be very lean in build, with symmetrical features, and good hair, teeth and skin.

A commercial print model (also called lifestyle or real people models) models for products and services other than beauty or fashion.  Some agencies do set their own criteria for their models, but generally there is no height, age or size requirements.
Generally, having good skin and teeth may be a factor, unless one is a character model, which type is also represented by commercial print agencies.

Being photogenic, whether a fashion or commercial print model, is extremely important.

If you need additional information, there are quite a few books written about the different types of models, and the agencies that represent them.  Check your local library, bookstore or online for titles on both fashion and commercial print modeling.

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
