Question
Hi Kitty:

I would like to gt my children into the talent industry.  We are in the ft lauderdale/miami area and I was wondering how do I find a legitimate talent agent to represent my kids without getting scammed?  Do you have any recommendations of ant agents you know of in the area?

Thanks!
Kim

Answer
There is a list available on the Florida-Models.com website (under Modeling Agencies, SAG Commercial Modeling Agencies) of some very good agencies in that area.  I'm personally fond of World of Kids Inc., in Miami Beach:  www.worldofkidsagency.com.

But certainly look over the whole commercial agencies list.  There's a bit about each agency and their website (if they have one) and - if it was stated in their website - what ages they represent.  They should all be good, as they not only adhere to state laws, but are also affiliated with the Screen Actor's Guild, and need to abide by their rules/regulations as well.

If you find another agency that you like not on that list, you can check with the Florida State Department of Business and Professional Regulation to ensure that an agency is licensed and in good standing.  They are online as well, although sometimes if you telephone them you get different information about any outstanding complaints (if there are any) against an agency.

Some of the books written about child modeling and/or acting also contain agency lists of agents who rep only children, or agencies with a children's division.  I would imagine they also have done research into who is legit.

Good luck to you and your children.

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
