Question
QUESTION: hey my name is jessica i live in mississippi, and i have always wanted to be a model, but i don't know where to start. I need a little help, because this is my dream it always has been.

ANSWER: You'll need to figure out what type of modeling you want to do, and are appropriate for, then search out the agencies closest to you who represent that type of model.

There are many books written about the different types of modeling available in your local library, bookstore or online, and modeling agency directories that provide agent contact information as well.

Some of the books that deal with the specific types of modeling also contain an agency list as well.  Nowadays, most agencies also have website that detail their criteria for models, (what they are looking for) as well as the submission process for new faces (what they want to see from you for consideration).

Generally, you would submit either snapshots or a modeling composite card (depending on the type of modeling) along with a cover letter with your stats and contact information, or attend an open call - and if the agency is interested in your look they will contact you.

Once you are represented by an agency, they will find work opportunities for you.  When you book a job through them, they earn a percentage off of the money you make (usually 10-20%).

In your case, since Mississippi has very little modeling work of any type, you will most likely need to relocate to a larger market if you plan to make this a career rather than a hobby.  But you can also look into related work as well, such as acting.  Chances are you still will need to relocate for full-time work, but it may be possible to work there, or perhaps create the opportunities you'd like in some other way.

Good luck to you,

QUESTION: How would i know if the agent i call is a scam or not, an i don't know what type of modeling i could do, I'm 5'7 i weight 134Lbs, which do you think i could do.... thank you so much for your time you've been really helpful..

Answer
In Mississippi, there is no license requirement for a modeling agency, so you'll have to use your best judgement to determine whether or not an agency is legit.

Generally, an agency should only earn it's money by booking you (modeling) work.  If they are making their money in another way (such as running classes, referring you to specific photographers that you are 'required' to use, running their own photography or printing studio, or charging fees for things) then there's less incentive for them to actually find you work.

You may be too short for most fashion agencies - although there are some who do accept exceptional looks from shorter models (i.e. Kate Moss).  So it's not out of the question, just you're much more limited.

Another option would be commercial print modeling, for which most commercial print agencies do not have the strict height, size and age requirements that fashion agencies do.

Same thing with swimsuit and promotional modeling - generally agencies who represent those types of models also do not have the same height, size and age requirements as fashion agencies.

For commercial print modeling, you also have the option of submitting your information to agencies who are either affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild (www.sag.org under Member Services, Find an Agent) or the Association of Talent Agencies (www.agentassociation.com) - as both of those organizations have their own sets of rules/regulations that member agencies have to adhere to, which can help you weed out legit agencies from non-legit ones.

Good luck to you,

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
