Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Modeling Agencies & Starting out

QuestionQUESTION: Hi Laura, I'm 15 years old and I'm trying to start out in the modeling career and then later on start into the acting career. I just got pictures done to send into a modeling agency but I wasn't really sure what happens if an agency does accept you?
Like what all happens after and will I only get called for photo shoots like once every few weeks?
Like I read all the top models always saying how they get to travel around for photo shoots but when does that happen for me?
Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Tommy
There really isn't a way to know exactly what will happen for you as it's different for everyone. But, typically if you sign with a large agency, you will begin to go on go-sees for them. You will show your portfolio to clients who are looking to book models for upcoming shoots. You may go on one a month... or one a day. It really depends on what city you are in... and how busy the market is.
You are still really young. You will not travel much at 15, more when you hit your 20s I would think.
If you have a marketable look, you will probably travel to Europe to shoot the magazines there and do the runway shows. But, it's a very competitive business!
What city are you in and what agency are you submitting your photos to? I can give you more guidance if you want to give me more info.
All the best to you
Sincerely
Laura Interval

QUESTION: Sorry I've been meaning to respond but you've been on vacation.
But I'm going to submit my photos to Marla Dell and I'm in San Mateo (20 minutes away south from San Francisco)
AnswerHey Tommy
Good! I'm glad to see you are on the right track. San Fran is a great market. I used to work there a lot. There are a few good agents there... I would try all of them! It's always good to get feedback from several different pros. Look them up in the phone book and find out their submission guidelines.
If you want more of my feedback on your pictures, I have a free online coaching service on my website. I'd be glad to offer any more advice as you need it. Your welcome to upload your pics in JPEG files and I can further guide you.
You'll also find a few articles on modeling and acting that you might find helful.

Good luck and have fun! Remember, you shouldn't have to pay the agent anything upfront! The only thing you should have to pay for is minimal fees for test shoots... to begin building your portfolio.
All the best,
Laura I
