Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Too short?
Expert: Laura Interval - 6/27/2008
QuestionHi.
I'm 5'6 and dream of being a model. Do you know if any agencies will hire models as short as me? I know that the standard is at least 5'9, but I just want the chance. Also, how does one break into the industry, especially living in VA, and college starting in the fall?
Thanks so much!
AnswerHi Rachel
Yes, the minimum height requirement is actually 5"8". There are some agencies that will represent shorter models, but I don't think you will find a satisfying or profitable career with them. There really isn't a market.
However, if you really want to be in front of the camera, I would suggest you investigate the commercial/acting market in your area.
I began modeling with a small agency in SC when I was in college. I looked them up in the phone book, set up a meeting and began working. I suggest you look at "talent agencies". I don't know what city you are in, but I'm sure there are plenty around DC. Give them a call and see what their submission requirements are.
Are you interested in acting at all? I think you will have a lot more on camera opportunities at your height down the acting road. Consider taking a class to see if it's something you would like.
Beyond that, take a look at your local Craig's List, or art paper. They will have listings for local model opportunities. But, always be careful. You will be working without an agent and won't have any protection as far as payment, overtime, photo usage... etc...
And don't ever pay a lot of money upfront! There are too many scams out there.
A talent agent should be able to get you started with a headshot. That's it.
If you have more specific questions, feel free to email me again.
I hope this is helpful!
