Questioni am starting to evaluate different schools for acting with my daughter who will be a sr in HS this year. Her strength is acting which is where she wants to focus. I know there are different degrees and philosophys in training. Could you explain a little about some common 4 yr. degrees and philosophys of training. I need some basis on how to compare schools. thanks, bob
AnswerHello Bob, This is a complex task which I wish you had started a year ago, however, some dilligence can find a college. The professional degree for acting is the BFA with a major in acting. An ordinary theatre major is not a lot of help for someone who wants to be an actor, unless they are weak on acting experience. Now, the very best BFA Acting programs have these characteristics: They are very exclusive, limiting their enrollment to just a few of those who apply. They require auditions. They drop students who do not make sufficient progress. They require little or no tech labs of acting majors. They have classes in how to have a career as an actor. They have a senior showcase for agents and casting directors. They are very very expensive. If you will let me know where you are located by writing to me at kencosp@aol.com, I will look for in state schools. OH yes, I need to know if she wants training as a film actor or a stage actor or both. There are other approaches to becoming an actor besides going to college. Doc
