AboutKitty Kavey Expertise I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.
Experience Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.

Question Hi I have always been asked to model when I was younger but was never into it. But, recently it has hit me that this is a natural gift that I really should look into using. I think that it could be very fun and there is a chance that I can go places doing it if I can learn the art and have luck on my side.
I just don't really know where to get started. I have been working on my diet and exercising regularly again to get back into shape and plan to pursue this idea in the following September. I am going to take off a semester of school and dedicate the entire time to modeling and go through whatever it takes. I guess looking at most cases, you have to go all the way to reach your goals. I think that this is a good start, setting aside parts of my life to pursue what I think I can really excel. Is this the right thing to do? If so, how else can I get started.
I have no background with modeling other than working at Hollister Company and taking pictures throughout the seasons to get approved of how they look on the employees. I can also get into a modeling shot through them and be one of the poster boys if I am chosen.
Please help me!
Answer It would be a good start to become a Hollister Co. model, and begin submitting your information to modeling agencies.
For the US, New York City has the most fashion modeling work and agencies - so if you're taking a semester off, that would be the place to go, ideally. But if you're near Los Angeles or Miami, you can also begin there by submitting your info to agents.
There are modeling agency directories available in your local library, bookstore or online. My favorite for NYC is: http://models.com/agencies/top-men/
Use your favorite search engine to locate the agency website to those agents you are interested in. Most have a website nowadays, and often there is information for new faces, such as the agency criteria for height, age, size, etc., and how to submit your info to them for consideration.
As I'm sure you know, fashion modeling can be a short career, so I would encourage you to continue with school if you can while working. That being said, if you are accepted into one of the agencies on the list above, then there's a good chance that you can really go somewhere with modeling, and school will wait.
